On Sunday the 13th of August, Netflix showcased the launch of upcoming local films and series coming to the platform this year. As the world’s leading entertainment service viewed around the world in more than 190 countries, it is a huge feat for so many incredible local productions to be featured on such a platform. Amid up-and-coming films like Ijogbon and Oloture, is one of the most anticipated series coming to screens, the Aníkúlápó Series.

Aníkúlápó was first released in September 2022 and was an enormous hit as this mystical folklore drama became the most-watched non-English film on Netflix. The 8.7 million streaming hours set the stage for the production to take on the next step and continue the 17th-century story. Though, as the first movie was 6 years in the making, it wasn’t just another movie that director Kunle Afolayan wanted to create, it seemed a series was the way to go. Now, as we sit in anticipation, we know that the Anikulapo series titled “Rise of the Specter,” has completed filming and is in post-production.

Fun fact: Anikulapo was originally set to be a series. However, Netflix wanted Afolayan to start with a movie and if it were to be successful, a series could be made from it. Now, here we are.

Rise Of The Specter will be a four-part sequel and will feature the returning stars Kunle Remi, Sola Sowobale and Bimbo Ademoye alongside Owobo Ogunde, Gabriel Afolayan, Lateef Adedimeji, Eyiyemi Afolayan, UzeeUsman, Oyinda Sanni and Taiwo Hassan. The story will continue following cliff hanger that left us all wondering what on earth Saro was going to come up with next.

We all sit in anticipation of the release date to be announced.
